An interesting article regarding the history of welfare and exploring (primarily) Republican rhetoric regarding the welfare system. The unfortunate truth is that the image of impoverished blacks being the primary recipients of welfare is incorrect. The danger in this? Not only do both blacks and whites alike believe this myth. but the real persons in need go unnoticed and under-served.
“From Reagan to Gingrich to Santorum, race-baiting has only profited the Republican leaders who have sold it. Those at the bottom, and poor whites in particular, are left to pay the price”
